Fine Motor:
- Sit and Sort: (Materials Required - 7 small bowls, tweezers, salad or kitchen scissor tongs, and items to sort (multiples of 7 different types of items that can be picked up using tongs and/or tweezers such as cotton balls, elastic bands, small blocks, gummy candies, pom pom balls, etc.). Have your child sit cross-legged on the floor and place the bowls in a circle around them, excluding the spot directly behind them. The bowls should be arms length away from them. Put the pile of the items to sort in front of them. Have them use the tongs and tweezers to sort the items into different bowls according to type. Tongs should be held like scissors (thumb in one hole, middle finger and ring finger in the second hole with the index finger resting on the outside of the second hole). The tweezers should be held between the tips of the index finger and thumb with the end pointing out through the web space (round space created when making the “okay” sign with your fingers) rather than hidden inside the palm. Your child should twist/turn at the waist to place items in the bowls that are in the back corners and the bowls on their non-dominant side. For an added challenge, have your child sort items by attributes or count the number of items in each group to identify the most, least, etc.
- Have your child use streamer batons (or rulers/pens/pencils with streamers attached) to form letters in the air.
- Cotton Ball Road Rally: (Materials Required - cotton ball, straw, and masking/electrical/painters tape. Optional - paper and/or small rectangular container such as an empty butter box or small cardboard milk carton with top cut off.) Set up - Put a 5 to 15 foot curved tape road on the floor. Tape a rectangular container at one end of the road (open end of the container facing the tape). Create tunnels along the road by taping a piece of paper on each side of the road while forming a gap between the bottom of the paper and the top of the tape road to make each tunnel. Activity - Have your child start at the end without the container. They should lie on their stomachs and place the cotton ball at the end of the road. They use their straw to blow the cotton ball down the road, through the tunnels, and into the garage (container). They will need to adjust the positioning of their straw and the force of their breath to keep the cotton ball on the road. Do not use hands to get it back on the road if it goes off.
